Dog troubles..
« on: January 20, 2008, 09:36:01 PM »
Hey folks, me again. Basically trying to sort out all the required paper work for our little darling to be moved from California. Now, where do we send the blood sample off to? And where do we apply for a PETS passport. Also, what kinda of information will the airline require before we get her on board. Sorry to sound like a newbie, but the defra site just keeps confusing me. If someone could help me, i'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I would suggest calling the USDA vet for the state of California (phone numbers are on the USDA website). They'll be able to talk you through everything. The one for Maryland was VERY helpful and in the end I wished I would have called them at the very beginning. There are a few people on here who flew their pets from CA, so hopefully they can give you some advice. Also, contact your airline. The people at Continental were great.

I brought my Abbey over to the UK four and half years ago from Los Angeles.   I don't think you can send in the blood sample for testing.  My understanding is the vet needs to scan the micro chip from the beginning  as the microchip is really the passport for your pet.  They will scan your pet before the booster shot, and then fill in a certificate with the vaccine info (lot number, mfgr. etc.) and then  the vet scans the microchip and puts that on the form for the blood test and sends it to the appropriate lab.  When we did this, there were only two labs in the US who were authorized to do the tests.  One was for military families and one (I think it was in Kansas) for civilians.  In any case, certain controls have to be in place, hence the need to use a vet.

Is your vet is familiar with the whole pet passport scheme?  When I started the whole process to bring Abbey over, the Passport scheme had only been in existence for about 3 months, so my vet had no experience with it.  I called the British Consulate and asked for some vet referrals.  You don't want to spend all the time and money on the procedure only to have delays when you get to the UK because your vet is not familiar with the paperwork necessary for the pet passport.

Feel free to PM with any questions.

Check out this thread: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=22296.0

It's excellent! There's also a Part II, but you might have to do a search to find that one.

she can be on a different flight and you pick her up. Things got rearranged with my flight and I flew to Bristol and my cats flew to Gatwick. By the time I got there to pick them up they were all checked out and ready to go!
