One credit account with two cards?
« on: January 19, 2008, 01:50:09 PM »
I just qualified for a credit card in the UK, and so to build my credit up, and to pay for my passport renewal, I applied for one.  I was told that one of the possible credit accounts I could get with my bank would give me two cards, but both would be attached to the same account with one credit limit.  I had never heard of this before.  Anyone have any experiences with this?

I know some people on here have had trouble getting credit cards, and I don't mean to rub anything into their faces by asking my question.  I sometimes think I come across horrible because I don't always think before I post.

Perhaps they are referring to an extra card for an authorised user? So two cards, but linked to the same account? I have authorised user cards for a number of my husband's accounts, and when I applied for a card through RBS, they offered to let me add one.

They said my husband wouldn't be able to access it.  Once again, I severely suck at clarity.  It's like you'd get a mastercard and an American Express or a Mastercard and a Visa but both of the cards would be linked to one account and one credit limit.  Both would only be in my name with no other uses.  It's very strange.  I'd just never even heard of this before.

Hi there Persephone,

Yes, this does happen, although I suspect rarely now. I remember a good 8-10 years ago having exactly this, one account and a Visa card and a Mastercard on it.

I have a feeling it's for people starting out with credit cards so not just new immigrants into the UK, but all people who are 'starting out' as it were.

I haven't really come across it much since my accounts got upgraded after having this type for a little while.

It's nothing to worry about as such, just be careful not to use them both willy nilly!

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I have this and it is a mastercard and an american express card .. the reasoning behind it is that some places dont take american express so you have the option to use the master card instead..

I have the same things.  (Again, Lloyds).  The M/C has airmiles.. and the Am/Ex is supposed to be good for something else.  Haven't used the Am/Ex, though.  Technically we now have 4 cards on one account, as Mr Madeira has 2 and so do I, but all paid through one account, with one credit limit.

These cards were sent when Lloyds stopped issuing VISA cards.
