I can appreciate this, but it's neither in the best interest of the consumer or the business, in my opinion.

I don't know much about business, so I can't really comment on it. I just know I've seen similar restaurants very close to each other quite often and don't really think much of it.

Is Mexican food becoming popular, at long last?  I know the latest Nigella cookbook (Express) has lots of Mexican themed recipes.... but then I assume she's doing this for the US audience she is after..

As far as I can tell, as one opened quite soon after the other (I think I may have misspoken by saying "recently" - it was in the past few months), I think it wasn't a direct copy-cat scenario. I would love to assume they both had similar ideas and Mucho Mas simply beat Tortilla to the punch by opening sooner. Not sure how long it takes to open a new restaurant concept in London but could it really be done in under 3 months, especially as I believe Tortilla is owned by a couple and not a large corporation?

I could be completely wrong about this, but I also think its wrong to automatically assume it is a blatant rip-off of Mucho Mas until you have more proof. And if the proof is given, then my opinion would probably change to have more of a negative opinion towards Tortilla, but until then, I am withholding judgement and simply rejoicing in the fact that two delicious Mexican takeaways have opened in London!

A few years ago there was an absolutely superb Mexican restaurant near me, in Barnsley!
Owned by a Mexican couple, the man was actually a doctor at the local hospital and my then partner worked with him. The food they served was specific to the region of Mexico they came from and was excellent....unfortunately the restaurant wasn't very popular locally although usually a reasonable number of people in whenever we went.
I recall one occasion the owner/chef coming to speak with us and saying that although not on the menu they had now started doing fajitas and chili con carne as that seemed to be what most people came in asking for, and the way he said t suggested it was tearing his heart out to have to include the Tex-Mex things on his very traditional menu! Why can't people be more adventurous?!

The final time we went was for my partners birthday, and looking through the menu there was one item I thought I'd like to try but decided to leave for another time and have a dish I'd had before and really liked.....the restaurant was absolutely packed....later in the evening the woman owner came to speak with us and said it was their last night and they were closing down because trade wasn't good enough! I kicked myself for ages after for not having the other dish I fancied!
They did give us some of the decorative items that they had in the restaurant and also a card with their number on as they would cater for private parties - although unfortunately I have lost the number!
