That is what I'm thinking.  If the cost isn't that different and by the time you tote it back, is it really worth it.  I clearly have some thinking to do on this one!

The more expensive the laptop, the more price differential. I've been researching to buy since last May (I have problems making decisions. ;) ) and if you stick to basic Vostros and Inspirons, the price differential is at most 20%, and that's worth it to save yourself warranty hassle.

It's once you start getting into XPS models, that the price can (and often does) almost double.

sounds good.  I might just pack ours up anyways, and if it gives out over there, I suppose we'll get one then!  Ours was a pretty nice Gateway, but it is getting a bit old and it sure seems like it is going to give out!

Hiya!

Yep, this is basically how it is at the moment with market forces etc. It 'used' to be a good 30-50% difference especially if you went to the electronic discounters in places like Canal Street in NYC.

I bought a massively high spec XPS M1710 about 2 months before the current M1730 came out, on the Dell UK website speccing it up came to around £2500 - and I got it for £1525 from a discounter! that's a £900 saving! - on the USA Dell website it came to around $4400ish so around £2275 ish at the approximate at the time £1-$1.95 ish - the cheapest I could find a US discounter of the 'exact' same spec laptop was $3600 USD - so in this instance it suited me better to buy from here.

It's when you start looking at electronics released 'only' in the US market and not here that you can get some good bargains and/or not available in the UK items. That also transfers to many other products and markets - clothes and various household goods for instance.

So, if you can find a good discounter here in the UK, it can be more worthwhile to purchase here. The old days of not having to research so much for the best deal in the USA  to knock spots of UK pricing is over!

Dennis,

Can you share the discounter you use? I've looked on eBay and while their prices are much better, I have a hard time finding a well-specked versions of the machine I want.

Hi Mort!

It's gonna cost yer!!!  ;)

What kind of spec are you looking for ? let me know and I'll see if they have something you could go for - the reason the XPS 1710 was going at this price is that the M1730 had just been announced ( at least I guess this is the main reason!)

I'm not being snooty by asking the above!!

for ref - my XPS 1710 spec is T7600 CPU, 4GB RAM, 512MB GPU, 1920x1200 screen, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, 200 GB 7200 RPM HDD, Vista Ultimate. The only things I didn't opt for was a blu ray drive and HSDPA card. The laptop has been absolutley awesome too!

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Assuming the discount is good, I don't mind paying a comission. ;)

I'll PM you.
