If you want something lighthearted, anything by Jasper Fforde should do.  I can particularly recommend The Fourth Bear and The Eyre Affair.  They are crime novels with a difference.

I also really enjoyed The Big Over Easy. I read the entire Thursday Next series and while I loved it, I do think his Nursery Crimes novels are better.

Well then get cracking. ;) You'll really like the other two I think.

Ooh, I almost forgot about Alexander McCall Smith books!

Someone at work said they would lend them to me.

But I just lost a brand new book on the bus and am very sad.  I don't want to buy a new copy.  Wahhhhh.

What about Under the Banner of Heaven by the same author?

Great suggestion - I hadn't heard of it but upon your (and another poster's) recommendation, I looked up some info about it on amazon and have requested it from the library.  If it arrives in time, I will likely take that with me, along with a couple of other recommendations thanks to this thread.

Which book?

Sharp Objects.  It is crime and not very nice, but I liked it and now I bet someone picked it up and they hate it.

Well I collected Into The Wild on Saturday and finished it on Sunday, so it's good I've got all these backup ideas!

In the spirit of "holiday destination" reading, I picked up a book at a charity shop that is set in Tuscany and happened to have been the winner of the Orange 2003 prize, it's called Italian Fever.  So I just need to secure a couple more books, am hoping that Under the Banner of Heaven is ready for collection at my local library before departure.

Happy reading, everyone!!!   ;D

Yeah!  Jasper Fforde.  I have only read the Thursday Next series though.

The Fourth Bear is the second book in his Nursery Crimes series. The first is Big Over Easy.

He's definitely going a bit darker for this one, but it's still great reading.
