Requirements for filing 1116?
« on: April 17, 2008, 11:04:57 PM »
I thought I was all done with my taxes, having filled out the 1040 and 2555EZ, but now I'm wondering if I also have to file form 1116 due to interest on UK accounts.

Our savings accounts/ISAs etc are currently in my husband's name alone (for exactly this reason).

However, we do have joint checking accounts, and I have a couple of personal checking accounts. The amounts on these are quite low, and they earn a piddly amount of interest. At most, I would say 1 pound a month.

Do I need to file form 1116 for this tiny amount?

I have already figured out that I don't have to report my accounts as aggregate of all accounts never exceeded $10,000.

As always, thanks for any advice!

You can file a 1116 for this, but it sounds like your total taxable income (after exemptions and deductions) will work out to zero.  If it works out to zero, then the 1116 is a moot point.  Someone like me will fill it in for the carryforward data, but once you've reached the golden goal of zero, the average taxpayer can stop trying to get it lower.
