UK Self Assesment after moving to USA
« on: April 11, 2008, 09:25:20 PM »
Hi there kiddos :)

We moved back to the USA March 22nd 2007 (WOW!)  I had filed a UK tax return since I had a large amount of overseas workdays for April 6 2006-2007 from here with my UK accountant. Fine.

So today I get a note telling me I need to fill out a self assesment form for April 6 2007-2008. I earned no money, didn't have a residence or anything in the UK. We have a UK bank account that has about...500 quid and I claim the interest on my US returns for that....

What do I do? Just fill out an online assesment? Email them and tell them I left the country? WHOOPS I wasn't expecting this!!!!!

I think you need to notify the tax office or contact them and speak to an advisor you could end up being charged for late tax return forms if they are not aware of your circumstances, let them know your not in the UK any more and that you are not working (self employed) in the UK. They will let you know the correct course of action to take.

I hope we get better weather with the new year I am getting rained out.

Good luck to everyone with respective visa applications.

Does your UK bank account automatically take out tax on the interest? If so, maybe you can get a credit since you've already paid tax on it in the US.

You need to arrange with the bank ASAP to stop withholding now.  Prof Potts appears to be mistaken.  You can NOT take a tax credit in the US for any foreign tax paid that was refundable.  Instead, you ask the HMRC to refund the tax.  You can take a tax credit if the tax is not refundable.  Presumably, your income after you left was so low that it was fully refundable.  You will need to sort out your UK situation before you can file your US returns.

I said "maybe" because I didn't know. I was hoping an expert such as yourself would come along and verify, which you did. Thanks.

That's the thing. I had NO income this past tax year. and about 2 quid in interest!  I'll call them and see what they say.
