Where Do I Apply for an International Driver's License?
« on: April 17, 2008, 09:43:30 PM »
I'm going to the US in September and I no longer have a US license. The last time I applied for an IDL was in 2001 and I can't remember how I did it. Is it a form I get from the post office? Or is there a website? I've searched and there are some websites but they're based in the US. I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Do you have a British license?  If so, you can just use that.

The International Driver's Licence, is really just a supplement to your official licence, so if you don't have a UK or a US licence, you won't be able to get or use an International licence (i.e. it is not valid for use abroad without the UK one to accompany it).

Thing is, because the international licence doesn't really mean all that much in the grand scheme of things, a lot of people don't bother to get one because the UK licence alone is sufficient for driving in the US.

If you really want to get an International Driving Permit, they are issued here by the AA and the RAC:

http://www.theaa.com/getaway/idp/

http://www.rac.co.uk/web/knowhow/going_on_a_journey/driving_abroad/international_driving_permit/

As already noted though, the IDP is merely a supplement with translations your actual license, and completely unnecessary for driving in the U.S. with a U.K. license.

Hmmm, oh, ok. I think I got one last time just to be on the safe side, since I wasn't sure if I needed one. I guess after driving so much faster over here I can just see myself getting pulled over for speeding, and the dumb-ass cop not recognizing my British license as valid. Sometimes I'm too cautious for my own good.  ::)  Thanks for the advice and websites!

One more quickie question -- if I'm renting a car in the US will they accept my UK license? I'm guessing they will...but I just want to check. Thanks.

Yup, no problem.  In fact, you may find it cheaper to rent using your UK license than a US one - we usually book through http://www.holidayautos.co.uk , but even booking directly with, say, Alamo means that full insurance is included in the rate rather than being added on.  I think I paid something like £150 for two weeks' rental last summer which would have cost me over £300 if I'd booked with my US license and then added insurance coverage to the daily/weekly rate!

ETA: Remember to bring your paper counterpart as well!
