Liverpool and Isle of Man
« on: March 07, 2008, 02:29:48 PM »
In a few weeks time, my SO and I are taking a train to Liverpool and then a ferry over to Isle of Man for a few days.

Any advice for us?

I've been to Liverpool back in 2003 but my SO has never been. Neither of us have been to Isle of Man -- what might the weather be like? things to see? places to eat (either in Liverpool or Isle of Man)?

Thanks!!
Laura

I can ask my boss when I next see him - won't be until next week though, as he's on the Isle of Man through Tuesday.    :D  He has a house there.

MeShell and (IIRC) eliza_beth both live on the IoM - one or both of them will likely be along after while to add their two cents. :)

Weather......yes well that is a good question...I can tell you at the moment is is sunny and cold...oh wait it is now raining..no wait suns out again..get the point... ;)

Sorry after living here for 10 years...lol the weather is so changable by the minute..you won't really get a correct answer on this...

Places to eat...the Garrison in Castletown..where I live is FAB U LOUS!! Tapas and very nice..must make a res to get a table if it is a Friday night or Saturday..Papparazzi in Douglas makes VERY nice calazone's and pizza's.

all of the museums around the Island are top notch..must start at the one in Douglas (which is Free) and then carry around the Island..(which are not free) make sure you go out to Cregneash Village at the very southern point on the Island..it is a working museum village....buy a travel ticket for the bus it saves money..if you aren't renting a car that is.....

what else would you like to know...it is a shame that the steam train and electric tram isn't running....

Oh the Peggy Story in Castletown is quite kewl as well...

That is kewl about your boss Peedal...where abouts is his house???

Laura if you want any telephone numbers just ask will get them for you...
Where are you staying?

Ballasalla.  His partner is Manx, so it's really her family home out there.  Though they're doing so much work on it, I doubt it will be the same house by the end of it all!

Hiya! Well, I suppose the main attraction on the Isle of Man for visitors is the scenery. Just about every town on the island touches the coast, and the beaches in Castletown and Peel are my favorites.

By the time you visit, the museums and heritages sites should have reopened for the spring and summer seasons. There are two castles, a viking museum, a living history farm, a medieval abbey and a free museum in Douglas that's open year round (which is where I work!).

To be honest, dining out here can be a bit of a disappointment. I really like The Garrison, which is a tapas place in Castletown. Most small pubs do quite nice lunches, but you might be slightly shocked at the prices since most things are generally more dear over here due to cost of living.

The weather here, temperature wise, is about the same as the UK, but we get some fierce wind and rains from time to time.

Just let us know if you need any more details. It can be a little dead here this time of year, but you should find enough to do to fill a weekend!

Edit: Cross-posted with MeShell!  ;)

More than likely you will be going from Birkenhead Laura..Make sure you look at your ticket to see if it going from the Birkenhead ferry terminal or the Prince's landing ferry terminal...makes a BIG difference..one is across the river from each other..

Take something with you to read..or a Ipod...Long journey by ferry..it will probably be the Ben My Chree ferry....

we always upgrade to 1st class as they give you free drinks (coffee and tea..or latte's) and biscuits..when after you have 3 drinks it is well worth it and you get posher seats... ;D

What will your Manannin Premium Club service offer?

Wow, I love this website even more!! Thank you SO much for your help and advice for our trip over to Isle of Man!!!

We are staying at The Chesterhouse Hotel
37-42 Loch Promenade, Douglas

and our ferry (I double-checked to be sure) leaves from Princes. My SO has never been on a ferry before so no matter how long it the travel is, he's pretty excited.

Thanks for all of the advice on what to do and see, where to eat, etc.

We did want to do some hiking/walking as we heard some amazing things about the scenery. Lets hope the weather helps us out...

Isn't there a big movie currently filming out there? although there tends to be quite a few??

Thanks!!!

The Chesterhouse is nice..I have booked several groups of ppl staying in that hotel. Right in the center of Douglas and all the action there.

The best thing I can advise is when you get off the ferry go to the Welcome Center that is there in the Sea Terminal and see what info they have about the IOM. I am sure they must have walking maps and the trails. The Millennium way walk is suppose to be lovely...

Yes there is a big movie being made here at the moment..it is the Zac Efron & Claire Danes Movie "Me and Orson Welles" I am an extra in it tomorrow..and there is suppose to be about 574 more ppl as extras...it is going to be manic!!!

Not sure how much longer they are suppose to be filming here..but they still might be here when you come over..Burt Reynolds just finished filming here as well..that movie is called "A Bunch of Amateurs"   Hope you have a good time!

I'm originally from Liverpool (donkeys years ago) and I'm a little confused when you say "Princes". Do you mean Princes Stage at the Pier Head?
Just thought I would ask because if you got to Liverpool and asked for "Princes" they may be confused. There is also a Princes dock but thats in the same vacinity. The whole thing maybe acidemic anyway because if you say the Isle of Man boat everyone knows where that is.
It is only by reading these posts that I found that the boat may have been loading in Birkenhead of a temp basis while they were rebuilding the Landing stage.
Birkenhead maybe like comparing Newark to New York in as much as it is across the river from Liverpool.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim re: "Princes" (I was reading it off of our ferry bookings). Here is what I could find out from the website: Location Princes Landing Stage, near the Pier Head. Thanks very much for all the help on IoM and Liverpool.
