Any way to call a UK toll free number?
« on: April 09, 2008, 12:46:18 PM »
Hi does anyone know how I can call a Uk toll free number for free? Off the computer? I've tried skype but it charges 10 cents a minute, not sure what else there is?

Are you calling within the UK?

If so, I think that using any BT land line, simply dial the number (0800, 0500, etc. + 6 or 7 digits) and the line will not be charged. BT has a table on their website of what codes are charged at what rates, including freephone.

Not unless you're in the UK - just as toll-free US numbers are only toll-free to US callers (in fact, my preferred calling plan charges double - 2p/min vs 1p/min - for toll-free numbers in the US!).

I use OneSuite (or rather, my US family does) to call the UK - any landline, 3ยข/min, and the US access number is toll-free.

Meg, I think I've seen you mention this OneSuite before. I had a look at their website briefly and couldn't quite figure out... stateside, is there one toll-free number for people to use no matter who they're calling? Or is there a specific 1-800 number that links directly to your own phone line in the UK?

(I misunderstood the OP--didn't see the word "cents"!)

Here's how it works.

My folks in the States call a toll-free number.

When the number connects, they dial either:

+ a PIN number (if calling from a phone other than their own - I think you can set up to three numbers as "home" numbers - I chose my parents' landline, their mobile, and my sister's mobile) then my number, or,

+ if calling from a "home" number, they just dial a pre-set shortcut (to reach my landline, it's #-1-0).  The call is charged per minute against the prepaid credit in the account - so as long as there is credit in the account, they can call anywhere in the world (including long-distance in the US).

So if my mom's calling from home, she'd dial 1-800-xxx-xxxx, then wait for a connection, then #-1-0.  Then I answer!  If she's at a friend's house and using their phone, she'll dial the same 800 number, then the PIN (10 digits - ours is our home number plus four digits, so it's easy to remember), then 011 44 xxxx xxx xxx (our landline).

So, to answer your question - there is one toll-free number, for your personal use, that enables you to call anywhere in the world.  It's different from what I use over here, which is a 0844 access number that links back to my BT landline (and therefore I have to call from my landline to get those rates). :)

I used to use onesuite when DH and I were still dating. I definately recommend it!!  My family still uses it to!  It really isn't that hard. My grandma can use it!  (no that's not a snide remark. She really does!!) :)
