Certificate of No-Impediment
« on: May 02, 2008, 12:27:00 PM »
Hi all,

Bit of a complicated issue here but hoping for advice:

N and I are getting married in GERMANY on 16 August. To do this we need to register our intent to marry asap. We are flying to Germany in 2 weeks and could do this. I have my US Birth Certificate, Apostile, all notary translated into Germany, in Germany ready to go.

The local German authority in Saxony still wants a Certificate of No Impediment. Which technically the US does not do. However, you can go to the US Embassy or Consul and Germany and get this. The only consul we could possible get to when there is Leipzig and the times they offer the certificate make it impossible to do and they won't offer me a special appointment. I cannot alter the trip as our work schedules make it impossible so I'm in a bind of how to get th document.

Does anyone know if I can go to the US or German Consul in Edinburgh and swear on this document and have it considered legal?

cheers
-Greg

I am going to the American Consulate in London to get my certificate of no impediment to marry in Greece.  It will need to be translated etc, but should work.  Not sure if the same is true for Germany.  I called the consulate to ask and they were quite helpful.  Best of luck to you!

Thanks Lissy!

I went to the Edinburgh Consulate and got an 'Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry' today for $30 USD in like 10 minutes, real quick in and out! We're headed to Germany next week to turn everything in but the Germans said they would even accept everything to register at their Consulate in Edinburgh too... now they tell us  :P

Better over prepared than under. Best of luck with the wedding!
