I read the book, but it looks like we won't be able to make it.  Sorry.  See you guys in July.

I will be there, with Mr. Karrit.  On the last third of the book now, so looking forward to the discussion.

Moggs, we will miss you!

I'll be there with bells on. Hope Moggs will make it in July too -- been really hoping to meet you. :(
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far.

I think Karrit's idea of having an online book club for those who are further afield is a really good one.

Moggs has read the book but unfortunately won't be able to make it next week, and I saw Geeta post on another thread that she has checked out our book club book from her local library in Scotland.  Maybe there are people on this forum interested in discussing the London book club selections online?

Of course UK Yankee is by its nature a place for people to discuss topics of all types - does anyone know if an online book club has been tried before?  Here or anywhere else?  Well, nonetheless, why not try it ourselves?

I suppose if there is enough interest to carry on after next week, we could use our current book as a test case to see if an online book club would be beneficial to anyone.

I've read the book but am not sure if I can make it next week now.  I would be able to get there about 8.40, but I'm not sure if it is worth it if you guys are starting at seven, so I'd welcome thoughts on this.  Having gone to the effort of reading the book, I would liketo discuss it, even if only on line!

I would definitely be up for discussing online! I checked it out thanks to the club. :)

Hi Vicky - an 8.40 arrival time would probably coincide nicely with having dessert with us!   ;D
Hope to see you next Tuesday!

As a general reply to the subject of the online book club, I propose that we start a new thread on 21 May called something like this:

"Online book club discussion re: Carry Me Down"

This would distinguish the thread from other discussions, and if anyone was interested in an online book club type discussion about any other book, perhaps they could start other threads like this at any time.

As an example, I had a few people recommend Under the Banner of Heaven to me in another thread, and I'm currently reading it and finding myself really wanting to discuss it with other people, but it's not on the cards for an in person book club anytime soon, so I'd be keen to start a thread of this nature and discuss it with people who have already read it.

Given that UK-Y is already an online forum enabling us to discuss a variety of subjects, it seems if anyone wanted to start an online discussion of any particular book, we could just try this and see how it goes?

Any thoughts on this from anyone else?

OK, our tally for the meet-up at Mestizo on 20/5 so far appears to be:

Mort
Karrit + Mr. Karrit
Vicky - maybe for dessert?
Me + SpiritualityDisciple (SD = DH, just a little joke on his nickname)

Anyone else?  I've booked a table for 10!   ;D

Cool, so I've reconfirmed with the restaurant and changed the booking from 10 to 8 people (just in case!).  The person I spoke to on the phone said that they are having a special festival on at the moment so they've got an extra menu to choose from in addition to their regular menu and the place will be decorated for the festival, etc.  Yay!

So we've got:

Courtney
Mort
Karrit + Mr. Karrit
Vicky - maybe for dessert?
Me + Mr. B (he just told me it was OK to call him SpiritualityDisciple  ;D)

If anyone else decides to come at the last minute, let me know!

See ya'll tomorrow!

So sorry I didn't make it last night guys....I was really late and wouldn't have been there until about 9.15!!!  Hope you had fun.

What did everyone think of the book?  I'm dying to know!

Hi Vicky - sorry we missed you last night!  I think we left shortly before 10 pm, so would have been there still talking away at 9:15 pm.  Maybe we could PM each other with our mobile numbers prior to the next meet-up so we can check these types of things next time... or let someone know if we are running late (as I was the first time!)

I think the consensus on the book was that we weren't overly moved by it at the time we read it, but that talking about it did raise aspects we hadn't thought of by ourselves and thus made it seem a bit more interesting and thought-provoking.

Karrit has started an online discussion thread about the book, so let's keep the discussion going!   :)
