P60 question?
« on: May 22, 2008, 08:05:09 PM »
Does anyone know about P60's

- I began working for my company in March 07
- I worked only 3 days in the 06-07 tax year (I was paid in late April)
- They did not issue me a P60, I requested my income information so I could give it for tax credits (they gave me the information)
- They have issued me a P60 this year that now includes the 06-07 income?
Is this correct?  Is it based on when you are paid or when you earned the income?

Thanks for any help, unfortunately this minor amount might be a big deal to the tax credit people, long story, but might be a big problem for me.
Thanks for any info.

The P60 you were issued this year (April 2008) should cover any money you made between April 6th 2007 and April 5th 2008 (I think those are the cut off dates), so if you weren't paid for your 3 days of work until late April 2007, then I believe it's correct that it should be on your P60 for the 07/08 tax year (because as of April 5th 2007, you hadn't actually received any pay from your employer yet, so there was nothing to put on a P60 form).

You should receive it from your employer if you are still working for them on April 5th - I seem to remember that my 06/07 P60 was attached to my April paycheck last year.

From www.direct.gov.uk:

P60
Your P60 is the summary of your pay and the tax that's been deducted from it in the tax year.

Your employer should give you a P60 to keep as a record at the end of every tax year (which runs from 6 April to 5 April the next year). If your employer doesn't give you a P60 at the end of the tax year, ask for it - you're entitled to it by law if you are still working for the employer at 5 April.

You might need it:

to complete a tax return, if this applies to you
to claim back any tax you've overpaid
to apply for tax credits
You may also need it as proof of your income if you apply for a loan or a mortgage - so it's important to keep all your P60s safely.

Your agency should have given that to you by now.  Agencies distribute from 7th April to the 1st week of May.

If you haven't got one, you can ask for a statement of earnings from them instead. Ask that its on headed paper.
