Marrying in a 3rd country...well, maybe.
« on: May 30, 2008, 04:52:37 AM »
I wasn't sure where to post this, so of course move it around if it's in the wrong place.

Does anyone have any experience or know what the legalities are regarding marrying in a 3rd country?  You know, like a destination wedding. After, I would travel back to the U.S. and apply for the EEA Family Permit.  I'm American here in the U.S. and he is an Irish National living in the UK. The reason for this, is he has a criminal record that will most likely not allow him to visit me here.  It's pretty recent and from what I understand they are not generous with the B2 visas here in the states. So, we wondered about having a destination wedding. Will the marriage be recognized when applying for the Family Permit?

If you're legally married according to the laws of the country that you marry in, it's usually the case that it will be recognized elsewhere.  You shouldn't have any problems with that.

We got married in Jamaica and there was never any issue regarding whether our marriage certificate was acceptable or not.
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

That's great news!  I can't wait to be there bearer of GOOD news!  :)
It's amazing how something else will present itself when there seems to be no other way.  LDRs and immigration are not for the fainthearted.

Jamaica is a beautiful setting for a wedding...must have been lovely, Kayla.
Thank you both for the information.
