So incredibly ill, not sure what to do!
« on: May 28, 2008, 03:00:17 PM »
I am so nauseous I can hardly function.

Of course I have not gotten around to registering with a GP yet, although I just made an appointment for Monday morning...  What can I do!?!  Sorry if this is a stupid question, but it's the first time I've been really ill since I have been here, and I don't know my options.  I have been getting waves of nausea on and off for a month, but today I have been vomiting and cramping, and completely miserable.  I feel like I should see someone immediately.  I am not eligible for NHS, but have the highest level of insurance from BUPA.

Help!  I don't feel good! [smiley=bigcry.gif]

Why are you not eligble for the NHS? You're on a spouse visa aren't you? If the local GP can't see you today I would get along to the local A&E, or call NHS Direct first, their nurses are pretty good at telling what's what.

Hope you feel better soon!

Nope, not married yet, decided to go back to uni instead, but no student visa until August.  Will NHS direct help me even though my insurance is private?

Ring this number - its NHS direct 0845 4647

You will be treated free if its bad enough for you to go to casualty..I am sure...but ask the NHS direct line to check.

A month is a long time to be nauseous. I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but have you considered taking a pregnancy test?

I have taken two...  Doesn't seem to be the issue.

Is a walk-in centre the equivalent of an urgent care clinic?  Ugh, I'm afraid to get on a bus today...

There are some wierd colds and flus flying around at the moment..or possibly you are eating something here that does not agree with you....I was going to suggest a pregnancy test too.

It could be plain old simple stress....either way you need to see someone and get it checked out especially if it has been going on for a while.

RING THE NHS NUMBER NOW!!

Hope you are ok.

I don't think so....only Accident and Emergancy Rooms / Casualty.

There are some private walk in clinics in London. I went to one at Waterloo station once. It cost about £40 to see the doctor, extra for tests but free to see a nurse. But honestly I'd call NHS Direct first.

If you can't get to see a doctor, which should be your first priority, perhaps you can get yourself to a pharmacy and they can give you something to tie you over until you can get to the doctor.

If you are unsure about your NHS coverage it might be a good idea to call BUPA and ask them what you need to do in order to see a doctor right away.

The NHS entitlement is complicated, but essentially unless you're here on a visa (not a visitor's visa though) Americans are not entitled to free care from the NHS and would be expected to pay. There has to be a reciprocal agreement between the UK and the other country, unless it's an EU country. If there is, visitors can have certain, necessary treatment for anything that becomes necessary during a visit.

At the moment there is no agreement with the US.

I'd suggest ringing BUPA and asking if they offer emergency services....

No advice beyond what people said, but I hope you feel better soon!
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

It could be a lot of things, but are you dizzy as well?  Perhaps it is an ear issue, if you are not pregnant.

If your with bupa then go to casualty a&e and tell them that your with bupa and you should be seen by a doctor and if you have to be admitted then bupa will transfer you to a private hospital or pay you to stay in the NHS one or it might be they will pay the hospital, but if your feeling that bad I would go to A&E.

Indy
I hope we get better weather with the new year I am getting rained out.

Good luck to everyone with respective visa applications.
