Question about Stocks
« on: November 23, 2015, 11:55:38 AM »
Years ago, I bought stocks in US companies via Edward Jones in the US. Then I relocated to the UK. For a while, there was a UK branch of Edward Jones, and we moved all the US stocks under their umbrella to supposedly make things easier, but Edward Jones sold their UK branches in about 2010 to Towry Investments, and that's where the stocks now sit. I still get 1099s and the stocks are still traded in $.

I'm wondering how I can move these stocks back to the US, either to US Edward Jones again or a low-fee or self-service firm when I re-locate to US soon.

Anyone help?

In the US there is an automatic service, but I don't know if it works internationally. I would talk to your brokerages in UK and US to see if it is possible, but if you are getting 1099s are you sure the "transfer" was ever made? How have you been paying tax on your dividends? and how exactly are the stocks registered...are they "street name" registered?

I am getting 1099s, but the stocks are listed on the account with my UK broker. I will ask my tax adviser later this week about them, and barring that, the brokers. I just want to know the question before I try to get the answer from them.

The question is where and how are your stocks registered. As that specifically. UK registered stocks would not generate 1099s.
