I want to teach myself to sew, but, I need fabric and a sewing machine.  Where do I find these items without paying a fortune?

Do you have a sewing machine I can borrow?  ;) :P

I hadn't thought of the car boot!

Freecycle might work for the sewing machine for sure. That or see if there are any independent fabric shops in your town (there usually are) and ask if they have a notice board for used machines. You also might try AdTrader.

The fabric shops will also have bins of remnants that are great for learning on.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

cash converters / money exchange normally have sewing machines in them...or ebay...possibly pick up a cheapish one through a catalogue.

As for cheap material..again..ebay..lots of fabric shops sell offcuts on there.  Some large markets also do cheap material.

You can always ransack your house for old clothing items to cut for material or even buy second hand curtains?

I was thinking the same thing recently, my mother has a beast of a singer sewing machine from the dawn of time and I really miss making myself clothes.
I was thinking about this

although it's not THAT cheap, it seemed okay :)

i saw a very basic sewing machine in the Tesco Direct catalogue for £50.   Thought that was pretty cheap!   I was *almost* tempted!

Ikea sometimes has cute not too expensive fabric.

Finding fabric stores over here has been quite hard.  All I can find are the expensive ones like in John Lewis or Laura Ashley and there is no way I am paying those prices. But saying that if you happen through a really good market, I find that a lot of the Indian stalls do quite cheap fabric. I just have to be in the right place at the right time for that though
