Student visa application
« on: June 03, 2008, 06:19:04 AM »
I'm asked to provide an address in the UK where I'll be staying. I don't want my school's student housing and prefer to find my own, so I don't have an address yet. How should I respond?

Where are you going to be staying on the day you arrive?
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

When I filled out a student visa application  last year to study in the US, I just used my academic supervisor's address (I checked with her that it was okay to give her address), since she was meeting me at the airport and I was going to be staying with her for a few days until I could move into an apartment - since arriving in the US in January I have stayed/lived at 2 other addresses. This was no problem at all in terms of the visa application. I think they just want to make sure that you will have somewhere to stay when you arrive.

So is it OK to use a hotel address? Or perhaps I should use an acquaintance's mother's address?

Where will you be staying?  If it is an hotel, use that address.

The question is part of the sufficient funds assessement.  In this light, putting the room rate of a hotel as the answer to question 6.1.23 could actually be a bad idea.

It is not compulsory for a single student to have accommodation booked before they apply for entry clearance.  If a student does not have accommodation arranged at the time that they apply for entry clearance, they might want to answer question 6.1.22 with something along the lines of "My university/college's accommodation office will help me find rented accommodation.  I do not yet know the full address” or “I will stay in university/college accommodation.  The university/college’s general address is: …” or “Rented accommodation.  I do not yet have an address”.

In response to question 6.1.23 they might answer something like “The university/college advises that the average is £x”.

If I enter the address of someone who I don't intend to stay with, will they verify it?

Why do you even need to do that?

.. because I don't know right now where I'm staying. It could be a hotel if I can't find somewhere to crash.

It doesn't matter.  See my previous answer posted yesterday at 11:10:25.
