London City Airport
« on: May 19, 2008, 03:17:22 PM »
We'll be in london and the Swindon area for a few days.

We're flying out of London City Airport but the start of our journey that day will be the train from Swindon into Paddington.

It looks like we need to do a combination of underground and the DLR (?) to London City and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations of the best (quickest) way of doing it and also if you had any idea of how long it would take (this would be the Monday bank holiday mid-morning)

Many thanks

Hello

I cannot recommend TFL's Journey Planner enough!  It gives you the quickest route for wherever you are going, and how long it takes:

http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en

Type in the correct date/time as well which will help you tell if there are any planned engineering works going on for that day.

Good luck!

Oh, London City is lovely!

Get the Circle / Hammermith & City / Bakerloo (Circle is probably better as I think more frequent, slightly faster and less walking) to Baker Street, and jump on the Jubilee Line to Canning Town, then the DLR.

I'd leave a good hour and a half, to allow for waiting for the DLR, which aren't as frequent as the tubes.  Allowing 4 mins per stop, plus 4 mins per change, comes to 76 mins, so you may actually need less.

Vicky (tube geek and better than TFL Journey Planner  ;D!!!)

*edited cos I forgot the Circle line!  Doh!

The TFL says 43 minutes but I think I'll go with your timing Vicky!  I'll take the word of a geek over any website!  ;)

Thanks!

We did Finchley Central to Cutty Sark yesterday in about an hour and I do find that the DLR has big gaps in the service.  Also, I like to allow for extra time for the H&C, a notoriously slow line, as well as the possibility of the train being held at Edgware Road to regulate the service.

I truly missed my vocation in life!

Oh, and if you are really early, there is a pretty good bar at the airport.

Good to know...It'll be before noon, but hey it's a holiday! (and it'll be noon somewhere in the world.) Hic!  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Definitely take the Bakerloo line to Baker St.  I personally hate the H&C and find that it's constantly slow & riddled with delays.  It'll be a bit of a trek from Paddington to London City, but Vicky's definitely posted the quickest route.

Spoken (or rather, written) like a pro!
