Is the first week just orientation or will classes actually start?

Usually universities will have a Welcome (or Fresher's) Week, but sometimes it's separate from the official 'term' dates and other times it's included in them. I found this on the SOAS website (I searched for 'Welcome Week'): http://www.soas.ac.uk/soasnet/students/new/orientation/orientation-week.html

SOAS Welcome Week is September 22nd-26th, with the International Students Welcome Day on September 20th.

Thanks but I had already read that and wanted some further information, which is why I posted that question.

Fair enough, although I'm a little confused as to what further information you were looking for, as the website tells you that Orientation Week is September 22nd and that the term also 'starts' on Sept 22nd. From that it should be fairly obvious that there will be no classes in Orientation Week.

Chances are that the Welcome Week will be so packed full of activities and events that there'll be no time for classes that week anyway - if it's anything like my undergrad university Welcome Week, there'll be something scheduled every hour of the day - it's a week for getting your bearings, making friends and having fun before classes start (many of the new undergrads spend Welcome/Freshers Week so drunk that they can't remember any of it afterward ;)).
