Do you mind if I hijack your thread? Thanks!

Hijack away. :)

Belita,
Do you have a grill?  Since its the nice time of year in MA, you could make a beer can chicken on the grill- plop the chicken on the beer can, cook. I think they sell the frames too. Or my mom likes to make it with soda sometimes, you could do coke, or orange, etc.
  Brisket is always yummy.
Steamers (steamahhhs, hahaha) in butter, drool.  That's fancy. Of course, not sure how much a 9 year old would like that.
You definitely need to serve Massachusetts corn on the cob. There is no better corn than in Massachusetts, I swear it.
For a real Mass favourite, you could do elastic bands (those rubber neck clams that are deep fried and served in a hot dog roll with lots of tartar) Or roast beef sandwiches. That's also a MA favourite!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

You could always do a barbeque chicken with thighs or burgers (jazz 'em up with onion, etc), grilled corn & asparagus, a watermellon and ice cream for desert.

Sorry it has taken me so long but here is the recipe for pavlova, which actually originated in New Zealand (thank you Britwife for the reminder  ;D)
Marshmallow Pavlova Slice
4 egg whites
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp white vinegar
300 ml double cream
A selection of fruit, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi fruit, raspberries, bananas and passionfruit are all good.

Beat egg whites until soft peaks form, gradually add sugar, beating well after each addition until all sugar is dissolved.  Add vanilla and vinegar, beat further 1 minute.  Lightly grease and dust with cornflour a piece of greaseproof paper and put on a baking tray (I use a cookie sheet)  Spread meringue onto paper, the recipe size is 11" x 7" but because my nicer serving platters are round I just spread the meringue slightly smaller than the platter I am going to use, the meringue spreads a bit while cooking.  Bake in a slow oven approx 150C for 35 - 45 minutes until meringue is crisp and has a hard shell but is still soft and marshmallowy.  Do not overbake.  Lift out carefully on to wire rack to cool.  The top of the pavlova may fall slightly this is fine.  When cool beat  cream until soft peaks form and spread onto meringue.  Arrange fruit on top of cream in a decorative manner, then put passionfruit on top.
Enjoy
