Baby Borrowers

NBC is having a new show called Baby Borrowers. This show has 5 teen couples who want to have the "adult" family life, babies, etc...and they "borrow" children for a few days at a time. They start off with three days of infants, then toddlers, then primary-age, teens, and finally caring for elderly parents. One of them has to work to earn money for rent.

I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of the show at first, but they have nannies in the house to step in if necessary, and the parents get to watch them from another house and can step in and talk to the teens if they feel the need. Seeing how they are doing it, and that the children are being so carefully monitored, I don't think it's such a bad idea, certainly beats carrying around a sack of flour for this lesson.

What are your thoughts?

My kids and I started watching the show last week and look forward to the second episode tommorrow. I love the idea of the show. I worked in a teen clinic setting for a few years and we had the mechanical babies and pregnancy suits that we gave to the teens. It really helped them to realize what taking care of a baby was like. This show brings up many issues and my girls can discuss it all together.

It's on right now in New Mexico (Mountain time) too - although I'm watching So You Think You Can Dance? instead .

this show should be mandatory watching for teens or anyone thinking they're ready to have a baby....

Well, I just love this show!!! I've decided that I can't stand the girl 'Alicia' though. She's incredibly selfish and SO not ready to have a child!!! Sasha and Jordan are my favorite couple so far.

Can't wait until next week and they get the toddlers. That should be fun

We had this show on TV here (its another remake by the US networks) about a year ago...

Ah, I thought I'd heard of something similar before, but I couldn't remember if it was actually a show in the UK or not .

I watched the shows here.  Very amusing.  Some of the teens were great parents and some of them, well, not so much.
 
The parents do get to watch everything and aren't far away at all during the whole process, so they can jump in when necessary.  Also, there are "nannies" who watch the whole time too, but don't interfere unless the child's safety is being compromised.   There were a few parents who took their kids away from the teens.   

It's a good show...very entertaining but I don't think it's realistic. When you have your own child you can't just say "I don't want to feed it" ...they know that someone will step in if they decide against taking care of the kid. They don't have a mother/father bond with those children because they arn't theirs.

I think it's as realistic as you can safely do this without these teens actually having the babies.

I don't like her much either. Kelsey surprised me, she was the one of that couple who really wanted a child.

Haven't seen this one yet, though I remember hearing about the UK version.

I don't think I could imagine being one of the baby lenders for this thing, even if you got to be nearby, etc.  ESPECIALLY not for the baby one.

And as for the borrowers...I agree that this might be as realistic as it can safely get, but I also have to say that had a camera crew been on hand to film MY first three days as a new parent...well I doubt I would have come across as the responsible, together adult I considered myself pre-baby, and I'd be slightly shocked to meet anyone that did.

Last night's show was really good. The toddlers were...well, very toddler-like. Some of the teens did better, but Sasha really threw a tantrum when the mother wasn't happy with how she took care of her son. She acted like the toddler. That suprised me. Ah, pre-teens next week. Gotta love 'em when they can talk back .
