Physical therapy in London- shoulder
« on: May 06, 2005, 10:36:21 PM »
Hi,

I just had shoulder surgery last week here in the US, and I confirmed a 1st June report date for my job in London. I will be needing a Physical Therapist to help with my rehab... Is this common in the UK? Assuming it is, can anyone recommend one or a source to make further inquiries?

Thanks,

Jack

Hi oskibear :)

Yes, physical therapy will be available, will you qualify for the NHS when you are move over here, or will your company provide health insurance?   I don't know what the costs are for private care for a physical therapist, but since you have had shoulder surgery, I know it's important that you continue that course of therapy. I am currently on the NHS list for a physical therapist for my left shoulder, which apparently I injured the rotator cuff of.  No surgery in my future yet,, hopefully it will heal without having to have that done,, but the waiting lists thru the NHS can be quite long. Good luck with the move, and everything else :)

Physio(therapy) - that's what they call it here in the UK - is available on the NHS or privately.  As you'll be resident here in the UK for your job, I don't see why you wouldn't qualify for free physio on the NHS.  My wife is a physio at a hospital just outside London, I'm sure she could supply me with better details.

You should be able to go on an outpatient basis but I don't know what, if any, waiting list there might be.  I imagine private could be rather expensive but maybe your employer would pick up the tab?

I just finally got the appointment for one for my shoulder/arm injury.  It took about 2 months I think?

I live in Poole.  I went to my GP in early January for my shoulder.  She referred me for Physio.  It took until July 1st for my first appointment!  Six months on the waiting list.
Since you've had surgery I sure hope your wait is not as long as mine.  Good luck.
Hope you are feeling better soon.
