50 best UK delicatessens
« on: August 09, 2008, 05:19:10 PM »
We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.
Ronald Reagan

Ah, well I can get a good one here, and that's what reading this article made me crave.

Many of these places listed sound like wonderful places to try.

I know a great deli in Kemptown, nr Brighton which isn't listed.

And of course there are the masses of Italian and Jewish deli's in London...the jJwish ones in East London and Golder's Green, the best Italian is I Camisa on Old COmpton Street.  Yum!

St George's road deli? I used to live opposite there and lived on crispy bacon/st. Agur/apricot chutney foccacia sandwiches.

The butchers a couple of doors down is also fantastic.

Valvona & Crolla

The fact that this Edinburgh institution is coming up to its 75th anniversary shows how good it is. The owners' extended family have branched out into cafés and restaurants over the past fewyears, but, for serious foodies, the original store is likely to remain the best, a tightly packed treasure trove of Italian oils, wines, cheeses, chocolates and much more.

Ultracomida

Narberth's answer to Dean & Deluca, this popular deli-cafe (with a sister branch in Aberystwyth) does a brisk trade in continental cupboard staples at reasonable prices. Though the deli's shelves support plenty of local produce, as the name suggests, there's a definite Spanish influence here. The tapas, especially, is becoming an institution and, if you don't want to eat in, you can buy everything from stuffed peppers to Serrano ham to go.

Ah, I'm so glad Ultracomida made the list! It's one of my favourite lunch places, not to mention the great shopping. I was just there the other day and have some fab cheese from them in the fridge right now!

one of them is literally on my doorstep!!!

That must make getting out of the house rather difficult.  ;)
