Does anyone know where to find...
« on: April 30, 2002, 07:05:14 PM »
I am desperatly trying to locate Bisquick and Crisco?  If there are none to be found, can anyone suggest a decent substatute?  This is only my second post, so that should give you a good idea exactly how close to my heart it is  ;)

Last time I was in Ely I saw Bisquick at both Tesco's and Waitrose. :) Don't know about the crisco though...

Hiya,

Check out this website:  http://www.skyco.uk.com/   It may be useful to you.  I myself never have brought anything from it but it seems to have a lot of American products including Crisco Canola Oil (Puritan) 946ml,  and  Crisco Shortening 454g.  Didn't see Bisquick though.

The Yankeelady I guarantee can help you.  I shop at both Tesco's and Sainsbury's and have never seen either.  But I've only been here 5 months.  So I'm still learning everyday.

Welcome.. :D

Check out:
http://www.expatshopping.com

They've got Crisco and bisquick. They don't have the largest stock, but I have ordered from them before.

For a larger selection of US goodies check out:
http://www.madeinamerica.co.uk
They've just updated their site.

ASDA sells Bisquick.  Have never seen Crisco anywhere.  Your best bet for that might be online.

Thanks everyone for the hints and tips.  I have checked out some of the web sits which I sat drooling over.  The shipping charges all seem high, but much cheaper than having it sent from the states (don't ask!).  I love to bake, but am having trouble making some of my recipes work over here.

Really sad question, but does anyone who bakes find the baking powder different here than in the states?  I find that most things I make taste really strongly of it.  ???

I've found bisquick in my local Tesco's as well. But, I think you can make a copycat Bisquick as well, I've got the recipe somewhere, I think.

As for the baking powder, I've not noticed anything strange, maybe try a different brand? I use Supercook myself.

For bisquick go to:

Copy kat is good for all kinds of substitutes  ;D

You can use TREX pure vegetable fat instead of Crisco.  It's in the chill cabinet, near the butter/margerine
in most grocery strores.  The thing to remember when baking is that plain flour here is like our cake flour,
use strong white bread flour where you would use plain flour or use a little extra.

I've not seen TREX myself, but I use Stork Maragine (especially for cooking/baking) and get good results.

Great tip on the flour, I wasn't aware.

Fantastic tip!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif] My main problem is that I have been trying to make pancakes from scratch, as I am unable to locate Bisquick at the stores.  I've tried about 5 different receipes and they all taste strongly of baking powder and are flat and rubbery.  [smiley=sad2.gif] More like a crepe than a pancake.  I'll just have to keep expermenting and when I come up with the right concoction I'll let everyone know, that way if anyone is interested they won't have to go through the disasters that I have.

The good news is that my husband, being British, doesn't know what a proper pancake should taste like. [smiley=devilish.gif]

:)OK found it.   Here's a recipe for American Pancakes that I used to use before I could get Bisquik-which I now seem to stockpile.

8 oz self raising flour
1 t baking powder
1 oz sugar
pinch of salt
2 eggs
1/2 pint milk
1 T melted butter
mix dry ingredients.  Beat the eggs with the milk, add the butter and pour onto dry ingredients, whiisking well.  Leave the batter to stand 5 minutes.  Viola.
