Quick knitting question

I'm working on a pattern that says to do 4 rows of St st. Does each row of knit/purl count individually, or does one 'row' consists of a knit row plus a purl row? Or, to put it another way, do I need to do 2 rows of knit and 2 of purl or 4 rows of each?

I believe you would knit one, purl one, knit one and purl one.  So, four rows in total.

I believe that Yael's answer is correct. Four rows total alternating knit rows and purl rows.

I just learned to knit last Christmas. I really wanted to knit some stockings for DH and I this year but found out they are ver difficult! Maybe if I get my MIL to SHOW me how to do that short stitch thingamajiggy then I'll get it better than trying to read directions. Good luck with the mouse!
