Santa Fe is gorgeous...plus there is a fantastic spa/hotel there called the Eldorado Hotel & Spa...went there for a girlie weekend with a friend and we loved it.  Santa Fe is also close to a few other nice places, cool historic sights (American Indian) and an easy drive from Albuquerque (a small city I do like and have family in).

Santa Fe is nice - I visited it on a day trip back in January (although it was freezing then) :), but it can be quite expensive compared to Albuquerque and other towns nearby. If you decide to visit the area, I would also recommend going to Taos too (about 2 hours north of Santa Fe) - it's a lovely little town :).

I just moved back to the UK from Albuquerque last week and I'm not sure I'd call it a small city anymore - the metro population is now close to 1 million (when I lived there for a while about 4-5 years ago, I was told the population was only about 600,000, so I was very surprised to find out it had grown so much in such a short amount of time) :P! I guess it depends what you're comparing it to though - if you're in London, it's a small city in comparison, but I'm from Bristol, which is less than half the size of Albuquerque in population :).

I think a spa would be great! Good idea! It could be really soothing both physically and mentally for your mother.

I agree with all the above suggestions but, just in case you do reconsider the north east... don't forget Bar Harbor and that area in Maine. Definitely worth it if you haven't been there before.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I am going to throw Montana in as a suggestion.  Fly into Missoula, and then take a leisurely drive up north and visit Glacier National Park, which is absolutely spectacular.  On the drive up to Glacier, spend a night or two at Flathead Lake.
I just got back from there last night. I'm ready to move up there! I wish.
We stayed in Whitefish for 2 days and went up to Prince of Wales Lodge in Canada for one afternoon. It was kind of run down we thought.

Thanks everyone,

I decided to give my mom a few choices and see what she felt up to.

1. San Diego
2. Napa Valley
3. Santa Fe
4. San Antonio

She decided she would most want to go to San Diego because she's always wanted to go, and least want to go to Napa Valley because she's been there with my dad. So, we're going to San Diego over Veteran's Day weekend.

I don't want to talk much about it, but basically the chemo she's getting now is just to give her more time.

Again, I'm so sorry about your mom. I really hope you enjoy your time together in San Diego and are able to have some fun.

One thing, you mentioned going down to Mexico for the day. From what I am hearing, it isn't the best time to go to. There have been some recent problems with a cartel in Tijuana and the California Department of State has recommended not traveling there. However, there are tons of fun things to do in San Diego including Sea World, the Zoo and great food.

I'm so very sorry Belita. I hope you both have a wonderful time in San Diego:

We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.

Oh, Belita, I'm so sorry. But I can't think of anywhere nicer to go than San Diego. I went to uni there, so let me know if you'd like any suggestions.

I would highly recommend eating at Old Venice on Canon St. It's a peaceful, romantic little restaurant with fantastic Italian food. My husband took me there the night he proposed. :)

Thanks everyone,
Jtorres, I'll check out those links.

Elynor, Italian is great. I'll make a note of that.
