When I was still in the USA and the person who was my boyfriend was here in the UK, we tried Skype to be able to talk for free over the internet.

He was on broadband, I was on dial-up, and I guess my horribly slow dial up speed made the difference because we found there was a frustrating time delay of sometimes as much as three seconds, before what I said to him reached him, or what he said to me reached me.

Two fast connections, however, may not experience that time lag. But it was so bad for us that communication was never smooth and we wound up going back to phone calls instead, especially for important discussions or information exchange.

There isn't Skype for iphone yet, but from what I understand it is coming eventually. There is a similar type program, but it uses a wifi connection through your computer, so you need to be next to your computer which needs to be connected to the internet. Not really a good option if you are in the car or on the move... great if you are in a Starbucks, I guess.  ::)

Well, there are tons of free applications on itunes.  What are you interested in?

pkmac, what is the program that is similar to skype?  You would think they would have an iChat program for the iphone and itouch by now :P

It's called iCall. http://icall.com/iphone/
It's a VOIP. I think there are licensing reasons why there isn't a program that you can use directly on the internet access on the iPhone.
I've investigated because I'm getting one for my birthday!
