Fat Tues vs. Pancake Day

I grew up in NOLA & dearly miss Fat Tuesday.  However, as I have learned today, we apparently have a substitute here in England...PANCAKE DAY!  Hey, it ain't a king cake, but pancakes will do~

Fat Tuesday and Pancake Day are the same, just different treats! It's not a substitute. Some call it Faschnaut Day or Shrove Tuesday. Growing up in PA I always had donuts or pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. We never made special cakes or treats like they do in some cultures around the US.

Growing up in Indiana, we didn't really do a lot for Fat Tuesday, but being raised Catholic, we did indulge a bit before Ash Wednesday and giving up things for Lent. After hubby and I were married, I adopted the Pancake Day joy of eating pancakes on Pancake Day.

We were all set to have them this year, but J. Gumbo's is having an all you can eat day today. Our plans changed quickly when they announced it a couple days ago. For anyone who hasn't heard of it, it is a Cajun/Creole restaurant chain. It is fast food, in that everything is ready and kept hot on a steam table, but it certainly doesn't taste like fast food.

Definitely different for this gal.  For me, Fat Tuesday is Mardi Gras on St. Charles street with a bucket of Popeye's fried chicken & an adult beverage or two.  Today's pancake race on High Street was a bit tamer.  Not one time did I hear "Throw me something mister!"
