Can my wife & daughter work?
« on: May 21, 2004, 07:46:28 PM »
My company wants me to move to the UK sometime over the next 6 months for 2 years. Can my wife and daughter work in London legally?

Thanks!

Is your wife or daughter born in the UK or EU? If not, they probably won't be able to work. Are you British? If so, your wife can get a spousal visa that would allow her to work.
Lived in Cheltenham, England> 2003-2004
Lived in London, England> August 2005- April 2009
Back home in Brooklyn, NY since April 2009

That's correct. Both of them would need to prove that they can legally work in the UK which means they'll both need visas.

Not only that but I believe they'll need a visa to live in the UK. If they plan on living here for more than 6 months at a time, they'll need entry clearance.

I recommend this site. It'll tell you what you need and how you go about doing it: www.ukvisas.gov.uk  The site is part of the Home Office.

If your company is planning to send you to the UK for 2 years then clearly they will need to arrange for you to have a work visa.  Once you do, your wife and daughter will need the appropriate visas to accompany you.  Those should allow them both to work.

If you receive a work permit, then your wife and daughter will be eligible for visas as your dependent.  See:  http://www.workingintheuk.gov.uk/working_in_the_uk/en/homepage/work_permits/overview_of_process/new1.html , which says:

"The spouse, unmarried partner and children of a work permit holder may be admitted to the United Kingdom as the dependants of a work permit holder. The spouse/unmarried partner will be given conditions of stay which do not place any restrictions, other than those that would apply to a resident worker, on their taking employment or engaging in business."

So your wife would be able to work on her visa, but not sure about your daughter...
