Any ideas for a little getaway?
« on: September 21, 2008, 09:39:01 AM »
I am planning a wee getaway for me and my nine year old daughter.  We've already spent a couple days in London.  I don't drive here so we will have to take the train from Sheffield.  We are looking to go during the October school holidays.  Any suggestions?  My daughter hates shopping so that rules out anything I'd consider to be fun!

Do you want to stay in the UK or are you willing to venture over to someplace like Paris. It's a fabulous city and there is just so much to see and do.  The Eurostar is a great way to travel but you would have to check as I know that one of the tracks is closed for repairs after the fire the other week, so trains are not currently running a complete schedule.

Would your daughter be interested in a trip to Bath, there is so much great Roman history there, the open top bus tour is interesting.  Then there is Portsmouth with the old navel ships.

Have you been to York yet?  Bath is nice as mentioned.  Leeds would be great for shopping!  ;)  What about Edinburgh?

Brighton! :)

Portsmouth is okay as a day trip but a bit grim generally (imo) what about Devon? Paignton zoo is brilliant, or somewhere near Longleat for some history/mazes/lions action!
Or this time of year you could get a really good centre parcs deal I'm sure if you like lot of activities, like horseriding, climbing, cycling, swimming, hiking, I loved centre parcs when I was a kid.

It's not really tacky like some holiday camps (butlins!) it's really quite cool and often peaceful and safe.

Centre parcs is a great idea, my children loved going there.  There are loads of things to keep you both occupied.  I suppose the only problem for you though might be that you don't have a car.

The one time i would reccommend Blackpool to someone is if they have young kids and the illuminations are on. Its also not too far from you.

Thanks for the suggestions.  :D   I think Bath and Blackpool are in the running.

Leeds would be great for shopping--minus the little one.
