It certainly pays to go to the more specialist brokers if you have anything which could be considered even slightly "unusual" for the U.K., such as an imported car, non U.K. license, etc.    Here's one you might like to try:

FYI, larger chains of brokerage firms often charge customers a fee (albeit a small one), while small independent brokers don't. It's not a universal rule, but it seems to hold true more often than not.

Hello everyone!  I just passed my practical test on Monday and officially have a full British license now or whenever it arrives in the mail.  When I phoned the car insurance company today (we are with the Post Office), they said that this would increase my premium by almost £200!  When I asked why, they said it was because I had just passed my test.  I'm not really sure what the logic is here, since having just passed the test doesn't mean that my 15+ years of driving is all of a sudden wiped because I have a new British license.  Did anyone else have a similar experience?  Everything that I've read on this forum seems to indicate that having a full British license should make my premium go down so I'm wondering how to deal with this.

I hope this isn't Directline you're referring to.  I've yet to call them about my pass this past saturday.  In any case I will be shopping around.  It's also a 1 month charge for cancelling.  Can we say ripoff britian?  :)

She said it was The Post Office.

Not rip off Britain, but a clear case that some insurance companies are rip-offs, and the Post Office seems to be a big culprit.  It is crucial to shop around for your insurance, and read the small print.

We really like using a small independent broker.  Ours does our house insurance as well as car insurance, and she really works hard to get us the best deal.  We have had widely varying quotes on house insurance, too.

Do they all charge a fee to cancel?

According to moneysavingexpert.com no, not all of them charge, and many that do charge a nominal £10 - £20, not £200!!!
