BBC TV license consultation
« on: September 15, 2008, 02:22:43 PM »
The BBC is holding an open consultation on TV licensing.  I have responded and would encourage anyone to do so if they have an opinion on it.  This is your chance to protest those threatening adverts.

Thanks! I went and responded immediately. I don't mind paying the fee per se, but some of the ways it's implemented are ridiculous. ::)

I don't like the implication that I am either blind or a liar if I tell them I don't have a TV.  >:(

Agreed.  I can't stand the threatening letters I get every other month!  No, we have not paid.  No, we do not use the television for anything other than games and DVD's.  We have been checked out and given the OK twice now, but the letters don't stop...

I've responded, for what good it will (not) do.   I have no doubt that whatever the consensus of opinion at the end of the survey, Capita/TVL will still continue the monthly "threat-o-grams" to every household which dares not to have a TV license.

i dont have a TV so they can send all the letters they like. they go straight in the bin, i never reply to them because they dont take a blind bit of notice anyway. I will not sign anything or let them in if they come round, or engage in conversation with them. I havent done anything wrong and do not feel i should have to defend myself against them in any way. they cant touch me.

Quite right.  If they don't have a search warrant you should not allow them in as a matter of principle, nor speak to them, other than to tell them to get off your property.  Replying to the letters will serve no useful purpose since they'll still send them out with regular monotony anyway.

It's this whole tone and approach which riles many people.

If you don't drive a car and have never taken a driving test, do you get monthly letters from DVLA warning you that if you drive a car you are breaking the law?  Do they tell you to call them or write to tell them that you don't drive a car?  Do they insist on sending somebody around to check that you don't have a car?  No.

Do you get regular letters from the Home Office telling you that you don't have a firearms license and reminding you that owning a gun without one is against the law?  Do they keep on threatening to send somebody around to check?  No.

Do the police send you a letter every month reminding you that it's against the law to commit robbery and murder?  Do they ask you to make repeated statements that you intend to do neither, then say they'll send somebody around to "confirm" the situation?  No.

So why does TVL behave like a cheap protection racket?

"Pay your license or we'll send Louie and the boys round!"   :o

Presenter Noel Edmonds has stopped paying his TV licence fee as he does not like the BBC's "threatening" manner towards those who do not have licences.

"Auntie's put boxing gloves on. I'm so incensed by the idea that I'm guilty of something that I actually cancelled my licence fee a few months ago," he said.

Didn't stop Noelly extracting millions from the BBC for terrible TV shows - didn't think I could dislike the man any more, but that's done it!
Should have been charged for manslaughter after one of his stunts went terribly wrong.

Responded to say I think it's fine as it is - however the nature of such things are that people normally only speak up when they disagree.
