US Immigration line question
« on: October 12, 2008, 12:19:08 PM »
My UKC husband and I are both traveling to LA next week.  When we go through immigration can he come with me through the US citizen area because we're traveling together or does he absolutely have to go through the "other citizens" line?  I feel like i'd be a lot easier if we were together, but if it's going to make someone mad then I'm not even going to attempt it.

IIRC, my husband and went together through the non-US citizen/visa holder line when we went to America.

Check with the IOs at the airport - some will let you both through the citizen's line while others will demand that the non-USC goes through the visitor's line.

Thanks for the info!  I'll definitely check with the IO.  I wouldn't have even thought to just ask them.   ;D

On our last few trips, we have gone through the US line together. I usually mention to the guard at the front of the line that my husband is a UKC, as sometimes we've had to wait to make sure that we got a booth that had the fingerprint scanner for him.

My UK husband and I have visited the US twice since we've been married - we always head for the non-citizen line, but end up in the US citizen line because things have moved so quickly - we get waved over to that line.  It's never been a problem and we've never asked anyone (we entered via Minneapolis once and Chicago the other time) and they've had the capability to do the fingerprint and photo, no problem.

We re-enter the UK the same way - he comes in the line with me, and it's never been a problem, basically the same thing has happened - they finish with the citizens quicker and we end up getting waved over into that line.  This last time, the IO noticed my husband's UK passport and asked him what he was doing in the wrong queue.  DH just said he was coming through with his non-citizen wife, and the IO just nodded, said it wasn't a problem...(Birmingham airport)

To me, it doesn't make much difference - one of us is always going to have to wait for the other if we go through separate lines...

We always make sure to go through together, and we haven't ever had anyone tell us not to. Also, we fill out one landing card.

The first time we went through separately, the IO made me get out of the line and go find him so that we could go through together, since then we always go through together.

In the US we go through the non-citizen line together.  We stay together, but chose that line because DH doesn't have a visa.

In the UK we go through the citizen line together.  We still stay together, but I have a UK visa and have been told to go through with citizen line with DH before.

I wouldn't split up when you enter the US, just ask the attendant which line.

We go through the Citizen line for both and have never had a problem. (Just got back from a trip home to NYC)

We just did this today!  The lady ushering the immigration line at Newark was telling everyone with a visa waiver card to go in the non-citizens line, but I went up to her and said, "This is my husband, and he has our customs form, can he go with me?" She said go right ahead so we went through the citizens queue together.  When we got near the head of the line, another official was about to tell DH to go into the other line, but again I just mentioned that he was my husband and she let us go through to the IO.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

We have gone through LA several times and have never had a problem with DH coming though immigration with me.

Oh that's great to know because we're flying into LA.  Thanks everyone for your responses.  After being refused entry in the UK and being stuck in a little smelly room for 8 hours, I'd much rather have DH with me just in case something happens with him.  I know it's a different country and situation and he'll have proof that he doesn't plan to stay in the US, but I'm forever scarred I think.
