Best recipe for sweet potato casserole?
« on: November 18, 2008, 12:55:47 PM »
I've never made sweet potato casserole, so this year will be my first time, as I am trying to make the Thanksgiving dinner as traditional as possible for my husband and in-laws....
What is the best recipe for this?  I have already bought mini-marshmallows, nutmeg, cinnamon, etc., just wanted to know how its generally put together.
Thanks!!!

June, I'm looking for the kind with the marshamallows on top.
Janice, that does look delicious, but I wanted to do one with the marshamallows for my hubby and in-laws because they think it sounds crazy... :P  Do you think I could use that recipe and still add the marshmallows?

Janice, that one is very yummy.  It's the pecans that make it so good.  I've also seen it referred to as "Sweet Potato Souffle".

Jewlz, I think you want the easy candied yam recipe.

It's your basic sweet potato with marshmallows dish, the classic one.   :)  And you can use fresh sweet potatoes or yams instead of canned ones, just peel them and boil them til tender before putting them in the baking dish with the other ingredients.

We do one similar to the one Janice does:

Jewlz you want just a traditional marshmallow one with cut up potatoes (or can of yams), brown sugar and spices of choice like cinnamon if you like.  Then chuck the marshmallows on top.

Just do a Google search for candied yams.

It is pretty sweet, I'm not sure you'd want to do that!

In my opinion, this is the best! But this year I've been outvoted in favor of the one with pecans.  >:( ;) Which is pretty good too. ;D

I think growing up ours was just boiled sweet potatoes and then added to the boiled sweets, a can of crushed pinapple heated up in the oven and then add the little marshmellows on top, all broiled in the oven. No extra spices, simple and sweet.  Though as of late, no one liked that one anymore, so it became pecans, brown sugar, cinammon, etc

See I love ginger so I think I might make that recipe once we move out....
