Can I make an appointment before I do the e-fasttrack?
« on: November 29, 2004, 07:56:59 PM »
Here's the story:

My fiance and I are engaged to be married in June, and I am planning to appy for my fiance visa in January, in person at the New York Consulate.  I am going to fill out the e-fasttrack form first.

I visited him in the UK over Thanksgiving. At the airport, I told the immigration officer I was going to visit my boyfriend. Upon seeing that I'd visited him frequently, she asked if we had long-term plans and if there was a possibility of my job moving to the UK. I said "no" to both, showed her my return ticket, and she passed me through with a friendly warning that if I planned to work in the UK or live there permanently, I had to get a visa.

I will be going back to see him around Christmas. At that time, he will be giving me his part of the paperwork that I need to show to the Consulate: passport, letters from landlord and employer, divorce papers, etc. I really don't want to lie to the immigration officer the next time I land at the airport, especially since we've booked a wedding reservation at the registry; I think it would be very hard now to say we don't have long-term plans. So I would like to just tell the officer that I'm going to see my fiance and pick up the paperwork I need to get my fiance visa, then I'm going to apply for the fiance visa in New York in January.

To make this more believable, I was thinking of making an appointment with the Consulate on-line before I left for England, then printing the page so I would have proof for the immigration officer that I was definitely coming back to the US to do the visa properly. However, I don't want to fill out the e-fasttrack form till I've gotten the actual paperwork from my fiance, to make sure I don't supply conflicting information. Is it OK to make an appointment before I do the efasttrack? I've looked at the e-fasttrack form, and filled it out partially, but I've never gotten all the way to the end, so I'm not sure if you are supposed to pick an appointment date after you fill out the form. I know the New York Consulate website has a spot where you can make a visa appointment, but I'm not sure if that's just for people who haven't done the e-fasttrack.

You can make an appointment before doing the e-fasttrack application.

But as long as you have a valid return ticket, you shouldn't have a problem anyway.

True. I might not be able to do it anyway, as right now they seem to be taking appointments about a week in advance, and I'll be away for a little over a week.

I think as long as I have the return ticket and I'm honest about everything, I'll be OK.
