Okay, not sure if this should be here, but I looked around and am thinking those here may be my best bet. If I put this in the definitely wrong area, then I am sure it will be moved, and I apologise.
In my unknown stupidity I sent my husbands passport off with my Visa application...does anyone know if the UK does anything such as a temporary Passport in situations like these? My husband is thinking about coming over to visit. He is also going to try and get our daughter's passport so she can come too. Of course I would be happier with both here for a visit, but I will take what I can get. Thanks!

Here on Leave to Remain. Will apply for UKC and get UK passport once I can swallow how much more money the UK Govt wants from me. Or when my US passport expires.

It would seem that getting a second valid passport in the UK is a bit challenging.  And I don't think "because my other one is with my wives visa application" will work, but you might try.  This was the only reference I found to it:

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/trip-paperwork/getting-second-british-passport-my-33725

But the important thing is you want/need a Second UK Passport (a replacement would invalidate the one that is sitting with the ECO, and that would probablly only complicate things now).
WARNING My thoughts and comments are entirely my own.  Especially when it comes to immigration and tax advice, I am not a professional.  My advice is to seek out professional advice.  Your mileage may vary!

I may be completely off base, but aren't they allowed to request her husband's passport back while her visa is being processed without interrupting the visa process? Or is this just the case for a EEA application? I thought that EU Directives wouldn't allow them to hold his passport.  ???

The HO was happy to return my husband's passport once they had seen it. But ours was an ILR application. Ours was a very complicated case. I do not even remember requesting it...but I think our MP might have when he inquired about our application. To request its return here, you fax them a letter. It takes a week or two. But since your application is at a UK Consulate in the US, maybe Vicky can chime in with how to contact them. But it is possible.

As for your daughter's passport, I know that to get a US one may be complicated. They are getting more and more strict about both parents being present to apply. But I am not familiar with the UK passport system. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

There is no problem with askign for the sponsor's passport to be returned.

Who to ask, how to contact them...that is a bit of a mystery.

Would a registered/special delivery letter to the consulate which holds the application be sufficient? She should include her application reference number and an address to send the passport. Would that work you think?

Worth a try.  I am not sure what succees other have had with this route...I am probably not the best person to ask as I have the problem of trying to contact from the UK, where writing isn't an option.

Okay, I am off to send an email to hubby to try and get ahold of our MP, and maybe get him to help if he can. Even if with just a letter, since it would be better for it to be returned to me, so I can send it registered mail back to him in the UK. I could just send it along with a registered letter to the consulate in NYC (with my application ref #, addy etecetc)
Other than that, much like everyone, who to ask & how to contact them would take an act of Congress, the Queen & God (or at least I am beginning to think that  :P) Maybe anyone actually answering the phones at these places are like Bigfoot and aliens? We occasionally hear about them but no actual proof of the? Ok, done joking now.
As for my daughter's US passport, I am not worried about that since I know that I have to definately be there for her to get it. If I can get my husband's passport back then I think we would be able to get our daughter's..but then again who knows? Would just like to be able to be with her on her first Christmas. Ahh, the joys or bureacracy  ::)
Thanks for all the advice so far...but always welcome more ideas...the more informed I am, the less stupid things I tend to think about  ;D ...ok, that's a lie...it's more like the less stupid things I actually do.

You shouldn't involve the MP like this, it is too soon.  At least make other attempts first.  An MP should only come into play if the need to travel is urgent and you are getting no where.

Ahh...ok. Will do. Tho he does already know us  ;D We got into contact with him after CAB told me my choices were the MP or an Immigration lawyer. After talking to him, and getting a meeting he told us (along with Immigration Advisory Service) that I would be better off leaving before the Oct 1 cutoff and doing the whole application process in the US. But I shall bow to your greater knowledge and send a letter off to the Consulate today. Actually, will fax first and see if I hear anything back. TY again, oh great one! Where would we be without all of you knowledgable people on here?

On a personal note...my thoughts and wishes are with you. Having been separated from DH for months after our daughter was born while trying the US immigration process and having recently been through a difficult ILR process, I can empathise with what you are going through...the fear you will never be together...the anxiety...and the sense of helplessness...why did this happen to us. And I had my daughter...and other kids...with me...I can only imagine how horrid that must be for you. Hoping this is all settled soon...and you are all together in Scotland for Christmas.
