mystery settings on my oven?
« on: November 26, 2008, 08:07:08 PM »
I just moved into a new flat and rather than settings clearly labeled with "bake" and "broil" the oven has four settings each marked with a little icon. I've searched and searched all over the internet but can't figure out what they could mean. The brand of the oven is CDA.
Maybe one of you has a similar oven and knows the answer?
Okay, here's what I got:

1. a square with what looks like an upside down light bulb with little lines coming out of it. Could mean "light on" but the heat comes on too and all the settings make the light come on too.

2. a square with a fan. Heat comes on, plus fan.

3. a square with a fan inside a circle. Heat comes on, plus fan. Is this different from the fan that's just alone in the square without the circle?

4. square with fire pointing downwards. This appears to be "broil" (or "grill"), where the heat comes from the top. This is the only one I've figured out and have been using it to melt cheese on toast. It only seems to cook from the top though--when I try to heat a pizza, the cheese melts but the crust remains soggy.

I tried cooking the pizza on one of the fan settings but nothing seemed to be happening at all despite the oven feeling warm. It's possible I didn't let it preheat long enough. I switched back to the "broil" setting and ended up with a slightly burnt top and soggy crust.

Any suggestions--about these settings or where I might find answers? I've searched on Google with all manner of combinations: "oven settings", "CDA user manual", etc.

Help would be appreciated--I've been wanting to bake cookies for weeks!
Thanks!

From looking at their website

1. is the oven light
2. is Fan Oven
3. is Fan cooking with lower heat
4. is Turbo Electric grill

This page has all the definitions

I have the same issues with my oven.  There's the little light symbol, one for a fan (I get no heat for it, so yeah, does it cool my food if it gets too hot to eat? ;)), the next one is the normal bake one, which is fan assisted as well and the fourth is the grill.

You have to set the temperature at the other knob and if you grill, put it high up in the oven.  Mine's a Caple and it's such a great oven.  I haven't tried baking yet, though, so we shall have to see how my muffins turn out!

Thanks so much! I searched over and over with all different combinations of search terms but that site didn't come up once. I'll read it carefully--baking is a science, as they say!
Good luck with your muffins!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

LOL the title of this thread made me laugh! I still do not know what the settings on my oven means minus the one that I cook with! I guess it's the fan one where I can then set the temp...LOL! Seems to work. I haven't been brave enough to use it, and dare not tell DH who will laugh at me lol

I have been here over a year and have never used the oven for anything other than heating up frozen pizza and garlic bread!

it took me ages to figure out grilling/broiling.  We always used a toaster oven in the US for that sort of thing so I was quite amazed to be able to make grilled cheese like I was used to in my oven using the grill setting! :P

You guys don't cook? :o  I've found the most adorable pans for baking individual sized pound cake, so I want to make gingerbread for Christmas in them, and all your talk about pizza is reminding me that I want to learn how to make Chicago style deep-dish pizza, since I've never attempted it before.

Oh I cook--on the stove top!  Chili, soups, stews, curries, etc.  But I am baking a birthday cake for my hubby next week--hopefully it will turn out alright!

The curse of the cryptic symbols strikes again!   Manufacturers love them now because they can use the same labels for multiple world markets, but when the symbols become less than obvious I think they lose their effectiveness.  It would be great to return to the days when things were marked in plain English.

Anyway, now you've sorted that one out, you just need to see if there's an option to change that Centigrade display to Fahrenheit.   ;)
