Overpayment of taxes and not getting them back!

When I left Scotland 6+ months ago, I filled out a tax form required for people who are permanently moving away (can't remember the name of it).  Sent in all the required documents and just the other day, finally got a statement from them.  It states that I overpaid taxes by 405 GBP, but that they are going to "carry it over" for the next tax year!!!  I don't understand if I have moved out of the country and no longer working there, why are they keeping it?  My husband who is still in Glasgow is going to chase it down for me, but thought someone here may know what this is all about.  Thanks.

My husband and I filed the same forms after we moved back to the US in June, and there is a place where you indicate if you expect any income from the UK at all in the future. We each indicated 'no' and both of us received rebate checks and separately a letter informing us of our new tax bracket since we both 'appear to be in between jobs'.

When I left the UK for the first time, my tax rebate took something like 8-9 months to get to me...so there's still hope!  They're EXTREMELY slow.

Ellen, you need to contact HMRC and specifically request that the repayment be made to you. OK, OK, this really should not be necessary, but it often is!

 

Thanks so much for all the input.  This is exactly one of the things that drove me insane living in the UK - so many things take forever and a day.  And while I'm at it, at the same time I filled out this form, I requested my pension be returned as I was only in the system a very short time.  Even though I never filled in a form or agreed to have the money taken from my pay in the first place, they did it anyway, and now they are charging me a 35 pound "administration fee" to give me back all of 50 pounds and have yet to see any of that!

Who is "they" that are charging you that £35? It is surely not HMRC? What is that fee for?

No, it's Glasgow City Council's pension organization.  Can't tell you the name off the top of my head, but it just goes along with the snails pace I encountered with every government entity over there, and what I think is an unfair system overall.

Sorry, why are they involved in getting your repayment from HMRC?

Sorry for the confusion (I'm blonde).  They are two separate issues that I happened to put together in the same rant - only because I sent off the applicable forms at the same time and am getting annoyed with both. 

One issue resolved, thankfully.  Just a few days after receiving that notice about them holding my overpayment until next year, I received another statement saying, (guess what), "you have made an overpayment of taxes and will be sent a refund."
