temporary documents?
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:23:17 AM »
Hi,

Thanks to all for the previous advice i've been given.  I've had to go about a long way around getting all this done -- but it has at least allowed me to stay in the UK rather than having to go back to the states to fix this, which would have been far more expensive for me.

I'm currently still awaiting my COA application, which should be back relatively soon though it hasn't passed 14 weeks yet.  I have also in the mean time had to submit an extension of my student visa as I'm going to re-sit an exam this year to finish my MA.

Which means visa wise i'm ok, insofar as that i'll have to wait for the student visa extension to go through.  As I hadn't heard from my university and was waiting on getting my passport back for the COA, I was unable to make an appointment do to this in person.  So, I'll be sending in my passport again for a student visa extension this week after the documents from my university are finalized.

The problem is now that more than likely they will take 14 weeks to actually grant my extension, and in the mean time i'll be getting married once the COA comes back.  However, I need to travel to Austria in February, but it seems unlikely my passport would be back on time to without making it a close call to actually book the tickets or not.

This may be the wrong place to post it, but since it regards immigration I thought i'd ask.  Is there any way I can get an emergency passport based on the fact the uk home office will have my passport?  Or is this only if I've lost it.  If I am issed an emergency passport, would it void my current one that will be sitting with the home office?

Finally, is there any official length of time I have to wait in between switching visas?  I would like to switch to my spousal visa as soon as possible once we've been registered.

Thanks for all the help and hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

I can't answer a single one of your questions except the last one!

I was also on a student visa, got the COA and then got married (nearly 18 months ago now).  I had an in-person appointment for my FLR and did that the day after we got married!  (The person I dealt with there told me it wasn't a record, as they'd once had a couple come in in their wedding clothing the day of the wedding to get it done!)

Good luck on the rest, I'm sure others will have some input!

We have discussed second valid US passports here before:

They are possible, but they are the exception to the rule and only issued at the discretion of the US Consulate and they don't necessarily deal with how UKBA will deal with you when trying to reenter the UK.
