I have my visa, but what's my status?
« on: December 17, 2008, 06:54:37 PM »
I just got my US passport back with a UK Entry Clearance sticker.  The type is "TO ACC PARTNER" as I am entering the UK with my partner who has a work permit.  We both have entry clearance with multiple entries, valid for five years from issue.  My question is, how do I know whether I am allowed to work?  My partner has a work permit and a job in the UK -- am I allowed to look for a job once I arrive?

If you are a work permit dependent (which I assume you are), then you are allowed to work as soon as you arrive (see: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier2/general/dependants/workingandconditions/). Unfortunately this is not made clear on the visa though - if you are permitted to work, it says nothing, however, if you were not allowed to work in the UK at all, then it would clearly state on your visa that you cannot work.

Thanks -- that makes sense.  I had thought it would mention something about work, but now I realize that I should be glad it doesn't mention work!
