Bought a 37" LCD HDTV 8 Months ago and want to move it to the UK
« on: February 13, 2009, 07:17:59 PM »
I guess I need several bits of information:

How should I ship the TV, considering they have to be handled in a special way?

Will it even work in the UK?

I have an iMac that is less than 5 months old and will be bringing that as well. I know it will work and have already bought the converter plugs for it. I have confirmed with with Apple...but I need to know how to ship this item as well.

Thanks,

Grant

Hi Grant,

The most important thing is power information (does the TV use US power only, or is it switchable?).  I couldn't find power information about that TV on Samsung's website, but if you look on the back there ought to be some information that says something like "INPUT: 100-240V~ 1.6A(1.6A) 50-60Hz".  See if you can find that information, and then we'll know if you can even use the TV in the UK.

In the Electronics child board under Expat Life there is a huge sticky called Technical Issues for Expats that goes in to detail on TV compatibility.

The user guide for the model in question is available here (36MB PDF file!):
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/search/supportSearchResultView.do?group=&group_cd=&type=televisions&type_cd=02010000&subtype=lcdtv&subtype_cd=02010100&model_nm=LN37A330J1D&dType=D&mType=&model_cd=&menu=download&prd_ia_cd=02010100&disp_nm=LN37A330&isEqualsY=

The specification pages are pretty useless in this respect though, and simply say refer to the label on the set for power supply information, which suggests there might be different versions.

Check the label:  If it's 120V only you'd need a step-down transformer to run it, if it's 100 to 250V (or something along those lines), it will work will just a change of plug or adapter.

Just about all modern LCD sets will accept 625/50 (British) video as well as 525/60 (American) via the component video inputs (and HDMI), but it might not work with fully encoded PAL via composite or S-video inputs.  The tuner section is also likely to be quite useless in Britain.

Considering the cost of shipping the thing and the hoops you may have to jump through to get it to work, my initial thought was just buy a new TV when you get to the UK.
