I would avoid freezing for longer than three months as I feel it loses flavour. Also I would be wary of salmon that was approaching the end of its shelf life because any listeria is going to be ramping up by that time, and I would not advise pregnant women to eat the subsequently thawed product. If the fillets have been pin-boned and skinned and then blast-frozen before being sliced and vacuum packed, then it is not a good idea to re freeze, and the packaging should state this.

Wow, I thought freezing got rid of listeria.  That is good info, thank you!!

I thought so too, Stacey. That's one of the things that I read online about eating sushi when you are preggers. If the fish is frozen then it is safe... wishful thinking I guess. Well...wishful thinking to even have the problem, really.  ;)

Nope. That is a rather dangerous misconception. A peculiar property of L. monocytogenes that affects its food-borne transmission is the ability to multiply at low temperatures. The bacteria may therefore grow and accumulate in contaminated food stored in the refrigerator or freezer. The bacterium retains its virulence even after five months of storage at -19 degrees C.
