Chicago is great... but I have always wanted to go to Boston.  I doubt either place will be very warm in March.  Have you thought of going further south?  You said you didn't want to go West, but Vegas would be fun, and nice and warm!   ;D  I also think Santa Fe is amazing, and that would be different AND warm... great for seeing unique artwork, shopping, and photo opps, not good for night life (it seems what few bars there are close really early there).  Otherwise, it is an amazing place.  It depends on what you want to do!

As a resident of DC, I vote DC, especially if you can get here for the Cheery Blossom festival.  Indeed there will be a lot of tourists but seeing those trees in full bloom is stunning and the City does a lot of neat stuff (most of it free) around the festival.  The only caution is that hotels will book up and the prices might be higher but the weather is usually rather nice.

I have never been to Boston but being from the midwest, I would caution on Chicago because the Midwest always gets late snow storms around that time and Chicago could easily have cold ugly weather (not to mention awful airport delays).  This winter has already been pretty harsh for the great lakes states so it might be a bad winter for Chicago.  Correct me if I am wrong any Chicagoan.

Let's know what you decide!

Just an fyi thing, it can still snow and be cold in Chicago in March.  At least you aren't considering going to Chicago in January.  My boss is going next weekend.  I just hope she doesn't get snowed in!

Coming from the Boston area, I'll tell you -- March is a crap shoot. If you're lucky, it'll be lovely. If you're not, it'll be misery. Snow is not unheard of. And those icy winds can cut down the  narrow streets off the Bay like you wouldn't believe.

That time of year, farther South would be my advice.

I was going to say the same thing.  We got married in mid-April 07 and we got 6 inches of snow the day after our wedding, in Pennsylvania.  Head south!
