Yankeeangel, I am so sorry that you had to deal with that crap when your lovely DS was born.

I find the UK attitude about red hair absolutely appalling! People in the UK are so poltically correct about everything else, and sometimes OTT when it's not partically warranted.  Yet when a child is born with red hair they act like the baby is born with a deformity BUT if that was the case they would never say a word.

Like I said before, if they find red heads ugly.....some UK "white" folks should truly have a look in the mirror.  I don't think that hair color defines beauty nor ugliness.

PS - Just to clarify, I am white.

There are a lot of red-heads on my father's side of the family.  When I was born (in the US, to US parents), the first question my mother asked the doctor was whether I had red-hair, because that was her worst fear she had for her child in terms of a possible "physical deformity".

But that is the only example I can think of for red-head prejudice encountered in the US.  I went to school with lots of red-heads, and I didn't hear of them, nor the red-heads on my father's side of the family being teased, etc.

I was teased terribly in elementary school and now even hear an iffy comment now and again. I remember in elementary school - it was when Duracell came out with the tester that you push against both sides of a battery to tell how much power was left in the battery - and I was constantly called "copper top tester" like that stupid Duracell battery thing!  I wont buy Duracell batteries to this day :)

I agree there is teasing, and it can be horrible, especially to kids, but is there real prejudice, ie missing on promotions, jobs, etc?  I have never heard that there is, so I am not sure that prejudice is the right word.

NB.  I am a brunette who dies my hair red, and who has a red gene in my family which I would love to come out in my children.
