Anyone know much about Myrtle (wood)?
« on: December 31, 2008, 11:57:17 PM »
I've got a couple of gorgeous myrtle wood plates/small round platters... and I'm wondering if it's okay to put plants on them, or if that would ruin the finish...?

Someone I know was given a bowl.  One of the care instructions was not to leave in standing water.  So, I'm not sure putting a planter with drain holes on it would be a good idea.  The products are so beautiful, enjoy them.

I think like any wood surface, you need to be very careful about what you put on them in terms of liquid if you want to avoid stains. I suppose you could look at the type of stuff used to seal outdoor wood furniture but that might affect the finish, too.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Thank you - I think I'll give it a try and keep an eye on them as they are coated with some type of sealant, but they are lovely and I certainly don't want to leave watermarks.

Being from Oregon where the Myrtle Wood tree is native.  I went and got this information for you...  There are some great websites that sell Myrtlewood pieces and even one that has small tress available...

Our finishes are hand applied or sprayed, are safe for food consumptions and extremely durable.  However, exposure to boiling liquids or automatic dishwashers will seriously effect the product.  For this reason we recommend ONLY hand washing in warm, soapy water.  Oil finishes require occasional use of mineral oil to prevent the absorption of food odors.   CAUTION: other types of oil may contain harmful ingredients so we recommend the use of only mineral oil.  The Myrtlewood Factory has developed and produces a wax called “Wood Shield”.  It is recommended that you occasionally treat those pieces that are used regularly for food with this wax.
