American Express gift card
« on: January 07, 2009, 10:32:14 AM »
My sister in law has sent my son one of these as an Xmas present. It's in US$ and says all over it that it's only for use in the USA so why she sent it I am not sure. The small print in the terms and conditions does say it can be used online so I am wondering if I can use it to purchase something from a US website and have it shipped over here. Has anyone done this or know any more about it?

I'm sorry I can't comment specifically about AMEX, but before I came over I did look carefully at the VISA gift cards, and there is a VISA Money Card, which can be used internationally, and also VISA Travel.  So, maybe AMEX have something similar.

They might have, but the one my SIL sent doesn't say anything about international use. I am just trying to find out if we can actually use it or whether it would be better to return it to her.

You can check the usage online--VISA had a good website, and I would think that AMEX would as well.

Yes  :)
The Gift Card is a prepaid payment device that comes with a set dollar value printed on the front of the card. It is not a credit, charge or debit card. It can be used at retailers and other merchants located in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that accept the American Express Card, including mail order, online and brick and mortar establishments ("Merchant"). The Gift Card cannot be used at cruise lines, for recurring billing purchases, or at casinos or ATMs. Usage restrictions apply for international airlines.

I wouldn't think there would be any problem since you would be paying for the item and the international shipping with USD.

You'll be able to use the card online with a US site just as long as they ship to the UK.  Hopefully the card is for a nice enough amount to cover the shipping charges.

This is probably completely irrelevant but I ordered DH a t-shirt form this site for Christmas and the shipping charges were really reasonable ($10 to ship 1st class).  http://www.bustedtees.com/

I only mention it because I am often trying to find companies that will ship from the US to the UK and the shipping charges are usually just too much for me to bother.  Good luck!
