Spousal Visa Q's...
« on: June 07, 2004, 12:16:03 AM »
Hi All,

My husband and I are going to relocate to the UK sometime in July/early August.
We married one and a half years ago in American and he emigrated from the UK to live here in NY with me.

Now we want to start a family and want to move nearer to family in the UK to do so.

Which brings me to our questions.

We have offers of work in the UK and savings of approximately $25,000. We would initially live with my husband's parents until we are on our feet and then we'll find a flat of our own.

So, does anyone know of a list of supporting documents and templates for letters? I want to be as thorough as possible in providing evidence as I can’t bear the thought of not being able to leave together if our application is unsuccessful!

If anyone knows any sites with good info on the above that would be wonderful.

I understand that we I can apply in person at the NYC consulate if I make an appointment online and they can same day issue the visa. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Many thanks.

I don't think that you will have any problem getting a visa as you've been together a while, you've got savings, a place to live and your husband will be working.  It pretty much covers all the bases that they will be looking at.

Check the British Embassy website.  This is where most get their information from.  I found it invaluable.  It helped me a lot.  There's no set template for letters.  Straight and to the point is fine.  http://www.britainusa.com/visas/visas.asp

Also your understanding of applying in person is correct.

Best of luck!

Thanks Elle!

I'll take a look through that site now.

With regards to the appointment system in NYC. I make an online appointment and then go on the allotted day with forms and evidence? Or do I send the paperwork in after I make the appointment online?
I'm just looking for the quickest way to get issued with the visa having watched my hubby's frustration with the US system (Nearly two years in the US and no green card yet.....).

Thanks again.

Make the appointment and then go in at that time with your paperwork.  The only difference would be if you decided to go "Fast Track" which I don't really know too much about as I think that's a new thing, but a couple people here have done it so you can perhaps gets some advice about it from them.  I think it's where you send in your application ahead of time and then when you go in you take your remaining supporting documents.  I THINK.  I'm sure there's also info on the website about it.

Some of the things we took: -

Marriage license/certificate (obvious)
Both our passports (again obvious)
My CV (resume) along with print outs of the e-mail enquiries I had been making with varying agencies in the UK about work (in your case I would say have your letters of offer for work)
A letter from my father in law stating we could live with my in laws
A letter from the landlord (in our case the council) stating it was ok for us to live there
Father in law's rent book (a copy)
Copy bank statements (all bank accounts, especially savings if you're going to rely on that)

I can't remember what else I might have taken (been 2 1/2 years!  Eeep!)  If you just go through the list on that website and follow through that, you should have no problems.  Really, it sounds like you've already got things together it's just a matter of gathering all the documents needed.

Again, best of luck!
