Missing American Football? - now's the time to get into Rugby
« on: November 09, 2008, 10:28:40 AM »
For anyone on the forum missing American Football the coming months present a great chance to get into the game of Rugby.

The Home nations (England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland) will soon be playing in the Six Nations tournament along with Italy and France. Prior to this tournament beginning all these teams will usually play warm up games against visiting teams - mainly from the Southern Hemisphere - South Africa(current world champions) , New Zealand,  Australia, The Pacific Islanders and Canada, are all over here at the moment.

Rugby is a great game to get into from both a sporting and a social point of view. It has none of the negative connotations of football (soccer) and generally attracts a really good crowd, also very family friendly. The old adage that rugby is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen, while football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans is still true today i think. ;)

A combination of finding your local club and watching all the great Internationals coming up over the next month will provide a good introduction to the game, particularly if you can get someone to give you a quick insight into the rules of course...

You may also be surprised to the see this species in its natural environment rather than on Strictly Come Dancing.... :)

I miss NFL very much!   :(   But I enjoy watching rugby.   :)  I've only been to a few live games but maybe it's time to catch a few more.  And I have a book somewhere explaining the game and rules, I'll have to find it.  I like how the players don't seem to exhibit spoiled and pampered attitudes.  And I appreciate the respect they show the referees, it's a refreshing change from some other sports.

some good games on this weekend, your better off watching them with someone who knows the rules to explain rather than learning from a book me thinks..

I have been watching Rugby as a substitute!  It was easy to get excited about because I moved to London in October 2003, at the height of rugby fever when the England team won the World Cup.

Mr K and I went to the Rugby Sevens matches early last summer at Twickenham.  That was great fun.  I called it Rugby for the attention deficit crowd.  It was so fast...and lots of scoring.

Even though Rugby is fun, it will never, ever replace my love for the Dallas Cowboys! [smiley=cowboy.gif]

Just so you all know...there is American football played in the UK.  I don't think it is played on a professional level, but I know they have loads of teams.  I didn't realize this until one of my friends who is always talking about his "football" team in Leeds explained to me that he plays NFL style American football.  I, of course, assumed he meant soccer but he had been using the term "football" with me because he knew I was American.

I have tried as long as I have lived in America (my whole life) to enjoy American football and I just can't get into it!   I am very excited though, as I am going to a rugby game on Boxing Day and I am hoping to enjoy it more than the freezing cold Denver Broncos games I have been to here!

I can send you the link for his football team when I'm at my home computer...I think (but I'm not 100% positive) that he said the league starts in May.  I can't wait!

 ;D

Hey guys,

If you're missing american football so much then why not come and play flag football? Sure you wont have the pads on but we're trying to put together a london based flag football team to compete in the UK flag football championship.

Email me if you fancy playing - you dont need to have played before - or pass the message onto interested friends

thanks!
