Cycling (esp in London)
« on: May 26, 2004, 03:32:54 PM »
I'm curious about whether anyone uses a bike for transport (commuting, errands, etc) and if so, how conducive the UK is to that.  I'm especially interested in knowing how it is to bike in London.

Loads of great parks to go cycling in. You'd never get bored for greenery.

If you are going to be commuting by bike you are definatly taking your life in your hands when take your bike onto the roads in London, but that doesn't seem to stop anyone! One workplace I used to work even had showers for bike commuters.

If you are interested there is a great group that meets up once a month on the last Friday of the Month to go cycling all around London. Great way to make new friends. They are called critical mass, and I think they originaly started in San Francisco. They meet at 6pm Waterloo bridge.

hmmn cycling in London, I know a few people who cycle all over London, personally I wouldn't fancy it, not around central London anyway, tooooo risky. You might want check out this news story:

But if you do, please do me a favour, don't run into pedestrians on pedestrian crossings!

Oy - I was going to bring my bike but now I think I might just wait to see where I live and if it'd be tenable to use it from my place to get to work (or bike around).

Cycling in London looks a lot scarier than it is - but of course it depends how comfortable you are on a bike, mixing it up with cars, in the first place. Just be confident (easy to say, I know), and be very aware of everything that's going on around you. Like anything, becomes second nature after awhile. And remember that you have just as much right to be on the roads as motorists. Scoobie mentioned Critical Mass: one of their mottos is 'We are the traffic'.

As for commuting, it depends on the commute in question, but in general it can be a great way of getting to work. You arrive feeling very refreshed and energised.

I've cycled all over the UK, including the end-to-end, which is Land's End in Cornwall to John O'Groats in Scotland. I think it's the best way to see this country, and as a mode of transportation it's actually quite safe - at least that's what the stats say. It certainly is in my experience. And it's extremely good exercise.

Any other questions about life on two wheels, please ask.
